Crash Discussions: Creature Features

PodcastimageFrom KING KONG to GRABBERS, with THEM!, SLUGS, THE BLOB, PIRANHA, GODZILLA and so much more, we take a look at the creatures that have crawled, swam, and smashed their way into our horror hearts. But why creature features anyway? Do they remind us to avoid thinking we’re on top of the food chain with all the answers? Listen in and find out.

  1. I know it’s a good podcast when I’m sitting here responding and interjecting it as if I’m actually involved in the conversation. Man, I love creature features! Kudos for getting in a reference to THE CRAWLING EYE.

Disappointed you didn’t get to JEEPERS CREEPERS (I and 2). Love both of those. Other favorites (in no particular order): FIEND WITHOUT A FACE; THE DESCENT; ISOLATION; SPLINTER; Q; PUMPKINHEAD; ATTACK THE BLOCK; IT’S ALIVE; ALTERED.

Since you mentioned GODZILLA, I’m looking forward to the remake coming up. Hopefully it’ll wash the taste of the 1990’s version and PACIFIC RIM out of my mouth.

  2. Thanks so much, Randy! But never fear, we’ll have another Creature Features in the future. How can we not?! There are so damn many. And I can’t argue with any of your choices for discussion – PUMPKINHEAD, ALTERED and THE DESCENT are big time favorites.

    Thanks for listening!

  3. “Kaiju” – “Bless You” Ha! Nice way to start the show guys 🙂 I recall The Asphyx! I think I had it on VHS. Been a long time since I’ve seen that. Just added it to my list and looking forward to watching it in HD.

If I am in Philly, I’ll be sure to check out Mostly Books. I loves me some books. Can’t get enough of ’em. That 120 Days of Sodom book is intense! Oh those wacky Libertines 🙂
Anyway, I digress…great discussion, guys. I am gonna try and get to all of the podcasts I’ve missed over this weekend.

You guys touched on some of my favorite Kaiju and creature features films. The Crawling Eye! Yes! And yeah, The Smog Monster does look like Cthulhu! And I liked how you guys broke down the significance of the films and the outstanding metaphors that they explored. Good job. The 90’s (The Heisei series) and the 2000’s G films are not that bad, Bill, you should check some of them out especially Final Wars.

Glad you guys gave some props to Slither, too. It did have that cool factor like you said. The FX were indeed very well done. Piranha is one of my fav Dante movies as well. You guys get into some classics in this show! Gotta see Slugs again soon. Props to Kong was fun to hear.

Keep the great shows coming, guys, always fun to listen to you two! Long live The Smog Monster!

    1. Thank you so very much, Vic! Jonny and I bit off more than we could chomp down on this one – so many creatures, so little time!

And have no fear, I’ll check out FINAL WARS at some point soon.

In the future, I have no doubt we’ll indulge in a full-blown Kaiju show – our own special trip to Monster Island.

Don’t worry about catching up – the shows aren’t going anywhere. I know you’re busy. Just enjoy the warmer weather and the outdoor photography.

Be well and we look forward to more of your great movie reviews!

  4. Oh and here are some of my fav creature features, by the way – The Mummy, King Kong, The Wolf Man, From Beyond, Cat People, Prince of Darkness, NOTLD, Them!, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Splinter, Alien, The Tingler, The Brood…man, I can keep going on but I just wanted to share a few. Thanks!

  5. That’s a killer list! We could have kept going as well. Man, do I love FROM BEYOND, PRINCE OF DARKNESS, THEM!, ALIEN, SLITHER, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, and THE TINGLER is just one fun ride.
